Field Studies in Architecture

2 weeks ago, a couple from USC joined the team in Barcelona and began teaching us under a new course, ARCH 424: Field Studies in Architecture. It is very similar to the Field Studies in Urbanism class we had a few weeks back, but now we focus more on built architecture opposed to landscape architecture. So far we’ve visited several famous buildings, and have had to complete some analysis on each.

We first visited Mercat de Santa Caterina, one of the oldest markets in Barcelona, built in 1848. A few years ago, Enric Miralles and Benedetto Tagliabue renovated the market and placed a giant colorful undulating roof structure above the old building. Below is a PDF of my assessment (I found the first image on Google):

Next, we visited Biblioteca Jaume Fuster, designed by RCR Architects in 2006:

And finally, the most recent visit was to a new cemetery outside Barcelona in a city called Igualada. This was also designed by Enric Miralles in conjunction with Carme Pinós. In 2000 the architect passed away – he is burried here:

I believe we have two more classes of ARCH 424 left, so I’ll post back after we document.
